Taurine - description
Taurine is found in food and in the body, in a free state (90%) and in the form of salts. It is found, with predilection, in muscle tissues, serum platelets and neuronal tissues. It is not an essential amino acid, as it can be metabolized in the liver, from glycine and methionine. Taurine is an energy product, the concentrated energy being consumed on one or more metabolic pathways, still incompletely elucidated by researchers. It is obvious, however, that taurine serves, like a neurotransmitter (messenger of the nervous system), as a regulator of the balance of salts and water at the cellular level and as a stabilizer of cell membranes.
Taurine participates in the chemical decontamination of oxygenated free radicals and is involved in the production and activity of bile in the body. Taurine is also necessary in lipid metabolism, preventing the formation of gallstones, promoting the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, improving heart function (making it resistant to stress) and preventing the formation of atheroma in blood vessels. Being characterized by a high combinatory capacity, as well as due to the fact that it is found in the body in free form in large quantities, taurine represents an important "raw material" in anabolic reactions of amino acid formation.
